CORPS OF ROYAL ENGINEERS

OFFICER'S FULL DRESS UNIFORMS

The Royal Engineers adopted the tunic in 1856.  It was scarlet cloth with garter blue collar and cuffs. It was very similar to that of the Field Artillery. Modifications were made to tighten the "fit" in 1868. The skirt was rounded in front with Garter blue plaits on the rear. (modifications to the rear skirts made by the Royal Artillery in 1891 were not adopted by the RE.) The cuff decorations were also like the RA with the Lieutenant having a gold lace Austrian knot, Captains, the knot with "curls" all round and Field officers the chevron also with decorated curled Russia braid above. A marked difference from the Royal Artillery were the shoulder cords which in Dress Regulations were described as "Treble twisted round back shoulder cords with scarlet lining".
