ABOUT THE ARTIST

Anton Hoffmann (1863-1938) was born in Bayreuth was a German painter, illustrator, army surveyor and university teacher.
After serving for nine years with the Bavarian Army, Hoffmann went to the Munich Art Academy in 1889 and became a pupil of Gabriel von Hackl and Wilhelm von Diez . He completed his studies there in 1895. From 1896 he exhibited regularly in the Glass Palace. As a painter, he showed himself to be a ardent student and put his emphasis on history and military painting. Characteristic of his style were applied with generous, wide, but restless brush applied with lifelike, strong tones and concentrated on the central events with standing light.

As an army surveyor Hoffmann drew several series on the uniform history of the Bavarian army in particular. In addition, as a member of the South German Illustrators Association he created numerous illustrations for textbooks, juvenile writings and history books.
