ABOUT THE ARTIST

H. A. Ogden (Henry Alexander) was born in Philadelphia in 1856. He trained in art at the Brooklyn Institute and the Brooklyn Academy of Design until 1881 when he set up as a freelance illustrator. He painted illustrations of American historical scenes which appeared in various periodicals. From 1890 he began a project to record the uniforms of the United States Army which were widely published. His work caused the U.S. Army Quartermaster General to commission Ogden to produce a complete record of the Army from 1774 to 1907. In addition to this work, Ogden produced many illustrations for books. He was considered an authority on Colonial costumes. He died at Englewood, NJ in 1936.
