The Imperial Russian Army 1835
Emperor Nicholas I of Russia (1825-1855) came to the throne after what was known as the Decembrist Revolt, an effort to prevent his coronation. It was ruthlessly put down by the Russian Army.
Nicholas was very fond of his army and lavished it with beautiful uniforms. Unfortunately, most of the arms and equipment were not much use and training was virtually non-existent. His military campaigns were expensive and badly planned.
The end of his reign was marked by the Crimean War (1854-56) which became a disaster for Russia. Nicholas died before it was finished.
By 1835, Nicholas' army was as magnificently uniformed as any in Europe.
After the Crimean War the uniforms became more practical.
