R- 36 The French Army Ca. 1910

Still sporting the color of the previous century the French Army with all their pomp and tradition made a splendid sight. They retained colorful infantry uniforms as well as the different cavalry units from Hussars and Cuirassiers to the Spahis and Chasseurs d' Afrique. These were the uniforms that proved so impractical at the beginng of the First World War and were quickly discarded in favor of the more practical "horizon blue" field uniform.
