THE BOOKS OF MORITZ RUHL PUBLISHERS

Moritz Ruhl of Leipzig, Germany were the most prominent publishers of popular military art of the period before World War I. Ruhl's fame today rests on its long series of colored plate books depicting the uniforms of the contemporary armies of Europe and beyond. Beginning in the 1870s and continuing into World War I, Ruhl's publications combined plates of representative figures from each branch of the service (not neglecting staff and administration) with schematic drawings sometimes depicting the uniform of each unit in an army. Although these works are not always totally accurate, they played a major role in satisfying the late nineteenth century's popular interest in all things military and remain important as sources today.
