HERBERT KNOTEL
Herbert Knotel was the son of his remarkable father Richard Knotel 1857-1914), who defined the art of military Uniforms. His work was acknowledged to be the world’s authority on the subject. His Grosse Uniformkunde displayed over a thousand accurately crafted colour plates of the worlds military uniforms and equipment from the 17th century to 1914.
Herbert, who was born in 1893 became his apprentice until he passed away. In 1914, he joined the Army and was wounded in the battle of Tannenberg. After recovering, he was commissioned into a cavalry regiment and fought the war mostly on the Eastern Front.
After the war, he continued the work of his father, this time with a realistic edge having seen combat. Between the wars he painted hundreds of illustrations, mastering the art of watercolours. He produced many projects such as cigarette cards and pamphlets. With the help of Herbert Sieg, he updated his fathers’s Handbuche der Uniformkunde which was started in 1896. The Uniformkunde has been translated by many countries and is considered to be the standard work of the genre. He died in 1963
