The First World War produced a host of war artists whose work that was both poignant and enduring.  Naturally, most of these artists were patriotic and their illustrations depicted heroism and acts of valour that probably exaggerated events but remain iconic to this day.

As a disclaimer, we must warn you that the illustrations are decidedly Anglo-centric, because much of the imagery in our archives is that way. We will be trying to find more diverse work that reflects the views of all the combatants in the war.
