Orlando Norie was born in Bruges, Belgium on January 15th 1832. His parents were originally from Scotland. His father Robert, a business man was an amateur water colorist, who exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy. His mother and her family, of Scots Ancestry had lived in St.Helena. Her father, a military officer was part of the contingent sent to the island to look after Napoleon.
Orlando was the brother of James, born near Dunkirk in 1821. The family eventually settled there after their father suffered several financial setbacks. It was in this very modest house that Orlando began his artistic career. It was soon evident that the revenue from Orlando's paintings provided the only income for the family. His inclination for military subjects began to be noticed. During the Crimean War he painted the Battles of Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman and received much praise. This drew the attention of the Venerable print firm of Ackerman's which had operated since Georgian times. Orlando's father died in 1857 and he was married in 1869. For reference purposes, he began to collect military uniforms, weapons and horse furniture from various sources and they were apparently stashed all over the house. Although he was very absorbed in his work, he and his wife produced five children.
From this time Orlando became one of the most prolific military artists of the period and Queen Victoria was a frequent buyer of his work.
Orlando Norie died from an aneurysm on 16th May 1901, shortly after his wife.
